best natural diapers

We often hear a joke that diapers are the best gift for young parents. But we believe that there is an element of truth in this joke. After all, it is this hygienic item that is a lifeline for parents during the first years of a child’s life – packing diapers can always use. Choosing a diaper is an important point on which the comfort and well-being of your child depend.

What is a diaper?

The most trivial question at first glance. You may be surprised, but many people confuse Pampers with diapers and don’t understand the difference between them. But the difference is significant – let’s deal with it.

Diapers are hygiene products that are designed to protect clothes from a leak when a person can’t control the defecation process. Diapers are made not only for children but also for older people who have problems with the urinary system or other health problems. Also, there are different manufacturers of diapers for animals (dogs, cats). Besides, diapers can be reusable and people can make them with their own hands. Diapers “Pampers” are disposable hygiene products that cannot be reused (you can’t just wash and put it on the baby again).

Why did we start calling “Pampers” all the diapers? Because this American company was the first diaper producer in the whole world.

A little historical background

best diapers for babies

According to a popular version, the chemist and inventor Victor Mills were the first who decided to create cowards that can allow not to clean after a child every hour. He seriously thought about how to make life easier for young parents after staying alone with his grandchildren. That’s how the first diapers with plastic shells were born.

The first experience was unfortunate. Since the composition of such diapers was not designed for children’s delicate skin.

Parents who decided to experiment and bought the first diapers faced irritations and rashes on the babies’ bodies.

But Victor didn’t leave the idea of inventing the best baby diapers and eventually the world saw the products of “Pampers” by Procter & Gamble in 1961.

The prototype of modern diapers made a sensation in the world market. The first diapers were practical and a person could easily change it with the help of buttons and velcro.

What are diapers made of?

What is the magic of modern diapers and what makes it possible to keep baby surprises while walking or at home?

Diapers are made of several layers:

The inner and most important layer of a diaper consists of super-sorbents which have hydrophilic properties. This means that they are a magnet for moisture. When your child pees himself, these granules attract fluid and swell up absorbing everything. Therefore, diapers become so voluminous. These absorbent granules consist of Sodium polyacrylate. This chemical has not been clinically tested, so there is no indication that it may be unsafe to the child.

It should also be noted that sodium polyacrylate used to be a part of female tampons. As we know, these hygiene products have the same properties. Sodium polyacrylate was banned in 1985 as the number of cases of toxic shock syndrome among women has increased.

Napkin-barrier is made of bloated cellulose that envelops the absorbent layer. It acts as another protective layer.

The outer layer that holds the whole structure is made of waterproof and synthetic materials. It can be a polyethylene tape or a non-woven material that is also covered with porous polyethylene.

Polyester or polypropylene fibers are used to make a layer that comes into contact with the skin of a child. It is soft and can only pass fluid in one direction.

At the same time, the polymer coating is the biggest problem and advantage of any diaper. On the one hand, it ensures dry and cleanliness and on the other hand, there is no air getting in and creates a greenhouse effect inside the diaper. If parents do not change the diaper immediately after the child does its work, the child’s skin can be irritated by contact with fumes.

Many manufacturers understand this principle and write on packages or in advertisements that they make “breathable” diapers. As if the thermoregulation in such diapers is being maintained. But some pediatricians doubt that it is possible to create such a polymer tape that will simultaneously protect against leakage and provide air access to the child’s skin. Even if it is possible, such diapers are likely to cost a lot of money. It is expensive and not every family can afford it.

Type of diapers

  • Fabric diapers are the most natural variant. As a material most often used gauze, which is folded several times, or cotton diaper. The first variant – the mother put gauze in baby’s panties. The other variant is a cotton diaper.

Advantages: they “breathe”, really super absorbent, and are made of natural materials.

Disadvantages: it is not convenient (gauze is not fixed reliably), you must have a sufficient number of replacement kits, frequent washing of all clothing elements, discomfort during winter walks (or in cold days).

  • Reusable diapers – they look like panties with an interchangeable absorbent liner.

Advantages: natural materials, good air permeability, and quick absorption of liquid.

Disadvantages: high cost, they need to be constantly washed and can cause a nappy rash on the baby’s body.

  • Disposable diapers. We described above what disposable diapers are made of. The main advantages are practicality and time-saving.

Minuses: absorbent gel (or other filler) doesn’t degrade in nature – those are bad to the environment.

The child realizes that he or she needs to start going to the potty with a delay because it doesn’t feel uncomfortable after stools.

  • High cost for the whole period until the child learns to use the toilet.

  • What to look for and what diapers are the best?
  • Diaper material. Of course, you should give preference to natural materials such as 100% cotton or cellulose (it is also safe for baby’s skin).
  • Choose the right diaper size for your baby.
  • Each manufacturer specifies its size table on the package of diapers. So be careful when you change the manufacturer’s company. A child’s weight and physique are the best reference points.
  • Methods of fixation.
  • Velcro should not leave any marks on the baby’s body and should not stick. You should also pay attention to the cuffs that surround the baby’s feet.
  • Additional diaper’s elements
  • Agree that the humidity indicator, cut-out for navel, and natural impregnation is very convenient.

Best diapers for newborns

type of diapers

Mothers from all over the world distinguish three main favorites of the best newborn diapers:

“Pampers” Premium care

Perhaps Pampers is the most experienced and time-tested manufacturer. There are budget options and the most expensive with the mark “Premium care”. They are made of the quality and thin material, well pulled on the sides, and incredibly soft inside. Also, their design has an opening for the navel and a humidity indicator – it is very comfortable!

Huggies Elite Soft

This manufacturer is also popular among moms and has many positive reviews. They are thin, super absorb any secretions, very soft to the touch, and securely fixed on the baby’s body.

Libero Newborn

It is not inferior to its predecessors (a quality Swedish manufacturer). It has similar properties.

We have already discussed the fact that disposable diapers decompose in nature for a long time. As a result, each child uses about 5000 diapers before they get used to the toilet. This is colossal damage to the environment. That’s why humanity has seriously thought about eco-friendly diapers. We have prepared for you producers who can offer organic diapers:

  • “Naty” (Sweden)
  • “Bamboo” (Denmark)
  • “Wiona” (Germany)
  • “Attitude” (Canada)
  • “Muumi” (Finland)

Each of them has been dermatologically tested and consists of organic materials.

Undoubtedly, your child deserves the best but don’t forget about the environment, so we wish you to find the best option.
